Acute Care Mission
Safa

Safa was two years old and living in Iraq when a tumor in his abdomen started to take over his body. Despite undergoing chemotherapy for a year, the tumor continued to grow, resulting in enormous pressure on his lungs, thereby making it difficult for him to breathe. After exhausting all resources in Iraq, his parents contacted the King Hussein Cancer Foundation in Amman, Jordan and asked for help. Upon his arrival at KHFC, Dr. Iyad examined Safa and felt that he could surgically remove the tumor. After five hours of surgery, Safa's organs began to function again properly. The tumor ended up weighing 11 pounds and after the surgery, Safa weighed in at 13 pounds. KHFC covered most of the medical costs of Safa's surgery with some assistance from the Ray Tye Foundation and CINI covered their living expenses during his and his family's stay in Amman. We are happy to report that Safa is currently undergoing physical therapy to learn to walk but otherwise is living the normal life of a three year old!
