Testimonial

"I can't even express how it feels to be able to help these mothers and their children. When I look into their eyes and see the genuine gratitude, no amount of money can buy that. This day is a very happy day."
- Dr. Mark Turrentine

Reaching out to Africa!

Image of a boy with a scar on his chest Children In Need International has expanded its' reach into Africa with the help of one of our board members, Melonee Douglas, who has recently relocated to Nairobi.  It did not take long for Melonee to recognize and express the potential impact that CINI could make there.  I soon followed in order to better assess what needs CINI could meet for the children in Nairobi.  Upon my arrival I was able to meet with a nurse named Jennifer Breiman, who works with Village Aid, a charity out of Chicago that also works in Nairobi.  Jennifer connected me with a childcare center in Kibera, a slum in Nairobi that approximately 1.2 million men, women, and children call home.  It is the second largest urban slum in all of Africa.

The childcare center I visited is housed in a metal shack with a partially laminated/cement floor.  Although the caregivers are loving and compassionate, the childcare center did not have a single toy to offer the children throughout the day and due to the squalor of the center's surroundings, the children had no option to play outside.  To help alleviate their boredom, CINI collected toys from American children living in Nairobi and took them to the chilcare center.  The children were overjoyed with their newfound treasures and you can see the delight on their faces in the pictures.  For the next few visits, CINI was able to donate rice, beans, cookies and milk.  We were also able to buy a pair of rubber boots for each of the children.  Most of the children had never had a pair of shoes and were used to walking in human waste and mud.  The children actually seemed more excited about the boots than the toys that I had previously delivered!  CINI will surely be helping these children with medical needs, food, and clothing in the future.  I would like to personally thank Jennifer and Melonee for connecting CINI with such beautiful children in need.
