Aya is an eleven-year old girl diagnosed with kyphoscoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine in both a coronal and sagittal plane. It is a combination of kyphosis (a curvature of the upper spine) and scoliosis (a side-to-side curvature of the spine). Aya has been approved for surgery at Shriners Childrens Hospital in Sacramento in the spring of 2009.
After arriving, Aya giggled her way through her examination and seemed to be perfectly at ease with her new surroundings at Shriners. It was amazing to see! Following her examination and x-rays, she was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis and sheduled for several follow up appointments, including an MRI, CT scan, and Echo cardiogram. Her surgery is scheduled for March 23.
