Wurood

Wurood is a ten-year old girl suffering from bilateral radial club hand. The normal hand connects with both bones of the forearm, the radius and the ulna, at the wrist. In radial club hand, a baby's radius was not formed properly in the womb, which in turn causes the wrist to be in a fixed bent position toward the thumb side of the hand. There may be a deformity or absence of the thumb as well. After reviewing her record and x-rays, the surgical team at Shriners Childrens Hospital has suggested a pollicization for her whereby a thumb is created from an existing finger.

Wurood was extremely cooperative and engaging during her initial visit to Shriners.  The doctor reported that the upcoming operation will enable her to use her hands to a greater degree.  She was born with only four fingers on each hand and the surgery will shorten and reposition one of the finger so it can be used as a thumb.  The initial surgery is scheduled for March 20, followed by a six week recovery period.  During this time, her hand and arm will be in a cast.  The surgery for the second hand will be done soon after.
